| ASHFORD SPINNING WHEELS I have been selling Ashford Spinning Wheels and related equipment since 1980. I have been spinning on the Ashford wheels since 1971. These wheels are the workhorse of the spinning world. I have owned and do own other spinning wheels, but the Ashfords are the ones that I work on every day. If you are spinning a lot, you just can't beat them. My favorite wheel of the Ashfords? The Joy, double treadle. I spin on this wheel every day. I prefer the double treadle wheel. I think it is much more natural to use two feet than to use one. It is also much easier for a beginning spinner. I have bought extra bobbins and usually have bobbins full of several different projects going at once, so many fibers so little time. Then would come the Kiwi with the double treadle and the jumbo head. This is probably the all around best wheel for the beginner. The price is certainly right. I love to spin on this wheel, the double treadle easily turning the wheel so it is one less thing you need to think about when learning to spin. And if you are spinning that wonderful bumpy lumpy yarn that beginning spinners hate, it winds easily on the bobbin. If you are spinning that fine yarn that must be plyed, it winds easily and the bobbins will hold a good deal. But I certainly cannot be without the Country Spinner with the double treadle and that wonderful massive bobbin and flyer. We use this one for both spinning and for plying. This is not a particularly good wheel to learn to spin on, but if you intend to spin a lot, it is certainly a good wheel to own. You can ply enough yarn on this wheel in one very large skein to easily knit a full sized person's sweater. My Traditional wheel sees constant use, with the normal spinning head replaced with a jumbo head, as a source for plying two full bobbins from my Joy Wheel.....and I do mean full, as in as much as I can spin on the bobbin and the flyer arm will still go around. Then too, I use the Traditional to spin up lots of yarn, filling those jumbo bobbins, and take the whole works to the Country Spinner and ply away...........that one will hold two pounds of yarn, thick or thin. And I do spin a thin yarn on my Country Spinner........but Oh! when you spin thin on this hunker, it takes a lot of spinning just get get across the bobbin once. I have owned several of the Travelers over the years, and enjoyed the wheel, especially after we added the double treadle. As for the Elizabeth Wheel, it was the love of my spinning life for many years. I had spent much time in Norway searching out old spinning wheels and came home with an intense desire for a rosemaled blue spinning wheel. The Elizabeth was it. I have just recently sold that wheel after thousands of yards of yarns spun on it. The Elizabeth is the "Lady" of the Ashford line, and if you are wanting a wheel that looks like a "period" wheel to be very decorative as well as functional, this wheel is for you. However, that said, once the Joy wheel hit the markets, that became my wheel of first choice. It has traveled far and wide in vehicle, llama pack, and hand. I do not foresee any reason that I will ever be without the Joy Wheel. We will be happy to talk to you about the Ashford Wheels at any time.
